The hot dog, a type of sausage was imported
from Germany and made popular in the United States. The hot dog developed an
association with baseball and American culture. The term “hot dog” is credited to sports
cartoonist Tad Dorgan.
During a 1901 baseball game in New York, vendors
began selling hot sausages in
rolls. From the press box, Tad Dorgan could hear the vendors yelling, “Get your dachshund sausages while
they're red hot!”
In the 19th century, German immigrant
butchers in the United States sold variations of sausages; some were thin and
long, like the dog breed Dachshund. They
called these Dachshund sausages. Over time, the phrase evolved into “hot dog.”
Today, hot dogs have won the world over, and they're
